All across our country, there’s a small business that’s more than just a “small business.” It’s where we share smiles, stories, and a sense of community. As the owner of Touch of New England, I’ve seen firsthand how these neighborhood gems breathe life into our communities. Small, local, independent producers and artists are our what we’re all about.
Prior to Touch of New England, I watched my parents entrepreneurial energy as they created two successful small businesses. I saw firsthand the dedication that goes into it. “Blood, sweat, and tears” is completely accurate. (If you’re interested in starting one yourself, resources like SCORE and the Small Business Association are excellent.)

When we talk about supporting local, small businesses, we don’t mean just shopping. This includes restaurants and services also, like accountants, graphic designers, insurance, and more. These are also major contributors and equally as vital to economic growth.
It’s easy to get caught up in the convenience of big-box stores and massive online retailers. But every time we support an independent business instead, we’re making an impact that ripples through the community. It’s a way to build a stronger, more connected community.
Choosing an independent businesses for your services, shopping, dining, you not only get real value and personal service, you’re helping your community as a whole. Here’s why supporting small businesses is not just vital, but necessary for the world we want to build:
They Put Heart Into Their Craft
Every time you make a financial transaction at a small business or, you’re supporting someone’s dream. These owners are passionate about what they do, and it shows in the quality of their products and services. Whether it’s a hand-carved wooden sculpture, a local coffee roast, or a bagel shop who makes the best bagel sandwiches you’ve ever had, these products come with a level of personal care and attention that mass-produced goods simply can’t replicate.
When you buy from small establishments, you’re buying something with a story. You’re investing in more than just a product; you’re investing in creativity, craftsmanship, and community.
It Supports Local Communities
Supporting small businesses means supporting the neighborhoods we live in. When you shop at a local store or hire a local service, the money stays in the community. It circulates through local economies, helping to fund schools, parks, and other vital services. That small café down the street or the indie bookshop on the corner isn’t just part of the fabric of your neighborhood—they’re often the lifeblood of economies.
It Returns More Money Into the Local Economy
Supporting small businesses is important because they are a key driver of the economy, create jobs, and contribute to the character of communities. You may have heard of the Local Multiplier, the additional economic benefit to a community when money is spent locally. The American Independent Business Alliance has a great infographic showing this effect. It explains how money spent at local businesses recirculates through the local economy, creating more jobs, wealth, and charitable contributions. Specifically, three times as much money stays in the community’s economy.
Studies show that money spent at local independent businesses return an average of $45 or more for every $100 spent, as opposed to $14 spent at a chain outlet. This means 3 times more money stays in the community.
Also, small businesses create more jobs per sales dollar that chain competitors, and several times more than large online retailers. This means you’re directly helping people in your community thrive. They also tend to be customers of our neighborhood printers, accountants, wholesalers, farms, attorneys, etc., expanding opportunities for local entrepreneurs.
Small Businesses Drive Innovation
While big companies often focus on producing more of the same to meet mass-market needs, small businesses are where innovation happens. They’re the ones who try new things, experiment with bold ideas, and take risks that larger corporations just can’t afford to make. Independent artisans, for example, are the ones pushing the boundaries of their craft and offering unique products that you won’t find anywhere else.
When you spend local, you’re encouraging innovation, creativity, and originality. You’re helping those risk-takers continue to dream and create. In a world where everything often feels a little too “cookie-cutter,” small businesses are the ones keeping things fresh, unique, and exciting.
You’re Supporting Ethical and Sustainable Practices
Many small businesses operate on values that prioritize sustainability and ethical practices. Whether it’s using local, organic materials, supporting fair wages for artisans, or opting for eco-friendly packaging, they are often leading the way in terms of sustainability and ethical business practices.
By choosing to shop small, you’re making a conscious decision to support businesses that align with your values. You’re choosing quality over quantity, sustainability over waste, and craftsmanship over mass production.
It Feels Good to Make a Difference
There’s something deeply satisfying about knowing your money is going directly to people who care. When you support these enterprises, it’s not just about the transaction—it’s about making a tangible difference in someone’s life. You’re contributing to their success, and in return, they’re giving you something meaningful. Whether it’s a product or an experience, it’s a win-win.
Plus, small business owners are people just like you. They’re passionate, hardworking, and invested in making their vision a reality. When you choose to support them, you’re building a connection.
